Volute springs are springs that are used in situations where large compressive forces are exerted in small distances. They are manufactured to form a cone shape, which is also called a volute. As the spring is compressed, the smaller coils slide inside the larger coils, allowing the spring to be compressed to a much shorter length than would normally be possible with helical compression springs.

 

Volute springs have a higher spring rate and can handle larger loads than traditional compression springs of similar size, making them ideal for shock absorption.
